How to play Nim

Make Nim your next activity in the game library. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Use the example to check your reasoning.

Your goal

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Follow this game’s rules rather than another version’s.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

A useful example

If only one counter remains in one heap, taking it wins under the normal-play rule used here. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Choose a deliberate next step.

Watch out for this

Only one pile may be changed per turn. Compare the situation with the worked example. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
